An Industry First, American Express to Sell Gift Cards in U.S. Post Offices

American Express (NYSE: AXP) today announced it will begin selling American Express Gift Cards in more than 1,800 U.S. Post Offices as part of a pilot test beginning in June. This marks the first time Gift Cards are being sold in U.S. Post Offices.

“Gift cards remain one of the most popular gifting choices for consumers, and as a major issuer of universal gift cards, it seemed a natural step to make American Express Gift Cards available in places where consumers can conveniently send and receive mail,” said Alpesh Chokshi, President of Global Payment Options. “As the company looks to move beyond traditional charge and credit products, expanding our distribution network to new and innovative locations like Post Offices is key to accelerating the company’s growth in new payments and digital platforms.”

Starting in June, the American Express Gift Card will be available in multiple designs in the $25, $50 and variable load denominations, which allow the consumer to select a denomination between $25-100. The upfront purchase price ranges from $3.95 to $5.95, depending on the denomination.

American Express Gift Cards have no fees after purchase, no fees for activation, no fees for checking a balance, no fees for monthly servicing, no fees for card replacement, and the funds on the cards never expire, so there are no dormancy fees. American Express Gift Cards can be redeemed at U.S. retailers and restaurants that accept American Express Cards. Gift Cards are a $1+ billion business for American Express. With one of the largest gift card distribution networks, American Express Gift Cards are available at more than 70,000 retail outlets. Some limitations apply.
