Merchant Acquirers May Benefit from SOPA, PIPA Revolt

This week’s display of indignation by the public and many Internet heavy-hitters over the proposed online piracy bills may help merchant acquirers avoid being dubbed as enforcers of the net, according to a report by Digital Transactions.

Wikipedia led this week’s charge by removing its English-language version from the web for 24 hours in protest of the bills. Other various sites gave nods to Wikipedia for the move including Google who, not surprisingly, penned a special logo for the occasion.

The bills in question are the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) in the Senate. 

Media outlets that have been closely following new developments have hinted that numerous members of Congress are withdrawing their support for the bill due to the large public outcry.  As of Jan. 20, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid postponed the vote on the bill (originally planned for Jan. 24) “in light of recent events.”
