Well, That Was Fun: Pinterest May Already Be Fading

It was being heralded as the next big social network — even Amazon and eBay had published new “buttons” on their product pages to connect their users to it

The network: Pinterest, a photo-sharing site where millions of users are “pinning” recipes, fashion ideas, crafting concepts and other stuff from around the web to share with their friends.

Pinterest had been enjoying incredible user growth through the first part of 2012. But now, that growth hasn’t just slowed — it’s reversed.

“Monthly active users are down from 11.3 million on March 1 to 11.15 million on April 1 to just 8.3 million today,” Business Insider noted on Friday, based on reports from AppData. AppData tracks third-party app and website interactions with Facebook.

Losing users is never a good thing. That said, however, BI does offer an explanation that explains why the sky might not necessarily be falling:

“The first three months of this year saw an explosion in coverage of Pinterest… That coverage likely motivated a lot of try-out-the-latest-hot-thing types to try Pinterest during February and March. Many of those people seem to have decided the site is not for them.”

What do you think? Is this the beginning of the end for Pinterest, or just a little hiccup in the middle of a long road?
