Kenya Pushes EMV Switch In Lieu Of ATM Crime

Kenswitch, a local payments provider in Kenya, announced that Kenya should be aware of a potential rise in gangs looking to commit card fraud, reports ATM Marketplace. Kenswitch reported that fraudsters are entering Kenya as a result of more countries implementing EMV card protection.

George Wainaina, managing director at Kenswitch, said, “As part of the migration to chip, criminals have moved here, but are involving Kenyans to carry out the crime.”

He also reported that many citizens were attacked by armed gangs waiting by ATMs and had to hand over their ATM cards. The bank made a public announcement, strongly encouraging financial institutions to start implementing EMV-enabled cards for their customers before Kenya’s target data of September 30 of this year.
