Mobile Payments Surge In Kenya

The total amount of mobile payments in Kenya jumped by 21.8 percent year-over-year as of August 2013, according to TechCrunch.

The growth took place in spite of a 10 percent excise tax on mobile transactions within the country.

TechCrunch noted that a diverse ecosystem of mobile payments has flourished in Kenya, including a system of paying for microinsurance products with smartphones and other mobile devices.
