Chicago Transit Authority Introducing Mobile Payments

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) says it plans to introduce a payment system for NFC-enabled mobile devices in the city’s public transit system.

The CTA will integrate the new method into its Ventra fare-payment network, which allows the use of contactless debit and credit cards to pay for tickets, the Chicago Tribune reported on Jan. 6.

“CTA and Cubic are testing the limited number of NFC-enabled devices currently on the market with the goal of having the system used for both buses and trains,” CTA spokesman Brian Steele said in a statement. “So far we haven’t run into any problems, but we are still testing.”

Earlier this week, the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) announced it is also investigating the future use of mobile payments. Click here to learn more about how the MTA plans to phase out the MetroCard.
