VeriFone and Gilbarco Mix EMV And Media At Gas Pumps

VeriFone and gas-pump maker Gilbarco Veeder-Root will collaborate on new fuel dispensers that include the ability to read EMV payment cards as well as display at-pump media advertising and entertainment, the two companies announced on Wednesday (Aug. 13).

Under the deal, Gilbarco will transition the payment electronics in its gas pump product lines to VeriFone’s point-of-sale (POS) technology. Both companies will continue to develop and market their POS systems for the gas station and convenience store market independently.

Gilbarco will become the software and solutions integration lead and sales and service provider for payment systems located on or near the pumps themselves — so-called “forecourt” POS systems — developed under the partnership, CSPNet reported.

Along with the October 2015 deadline approaching to shift liability to merchants who cannot support the use of EMV credit and debit cards, many gas station and convenience store retailers will elect to accept alternative payments as more consumers adopt new services to pay with their smartphones, the according to the companies.
