Dubbed Clementine, the assistant is available to most U.S. and Canadian customers through the Instacart app and website, according to the release.

The tool can build a cart based on customer messages such as “I need a week of budget-friendly kid lunches,” “high-protein easy dinners for two,” “everything for a football watch party for 20 people” or “order my usuals,” the release said.

Because Clementine has access to Instacart’s lifetime orders, catalog and daily inventory signals, it knows what is currently available on the shelves of the customer’s chosen store, what is on sale at that store and what the customer buys week after week, per the release.

With this data, the AI assistant can generate personalized recipes, apply customer preferences, surface relevant deals and reorder based on past order history.

“We’ve spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work,” Instacart CEO Chris Rogers said in the release.

Instacart also announced Wednesday that new grocery partners are now live with Cart Assistant, the company’s white-label enterprise AI shopping assistant that is built for grocers and uses the same technology as Clementine.

Cart Assistant creates a branded assistant based on Instacart’s technology and the grocer’s catalog and customer data, and it enables grocers to offer their own branded agentic shopping experience on their website, according to the release.

Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group and Woodman’s are now live with Cart Assistant. Aldi U.S., Harmons, The Save Mart Companies and Stew Leonard’s will soon add the assistant, per the release.

Instacart said during a May earnings call that Cart Assistant was available to about 25% of U.S. customers. The company found that early users of the AI-powered conversational shopping experience were building meal plans, discovering recipes, researching products and assembling baskets faster.

The PYMNTS Intelligence report “Global Digital Shopping Index: The AI-Powered Shopper Has Arrived” found that 64% of shoppers expect to shop with AI agents at least occasionally within the next two years, and 30% expect to do so frequently or almost always.
