The model builds on a version released in public preview earlier this month, the French startup said in the announcement.
“The response to the preview has exceeded our expectations, and we’re grateful to our developer community, early-access customers, and partners for their support, collaboration and feedback,” the announcement said.
The model shows strong performance on cybersecurity benchmarks, “while achieving an average refusal rate of 96.6% on malicious cyber requests, the highest we measure among open models,” according to the announcement.

Large 4 is the best open-weight model for coding and one of the world’s overall most capable open models, the announcement said.
Nicknamed “Le Chonk” and featuring an orange cat logo—“chonk” being internet slang for a hefty cat—the model is designed to be used by companies on their own systems to lessen reliance on third-party models.
“I’m not comfortable living in a world in which open weights do not exist,” Mistral Vice President of Science Pierre Stock said, according to a Thursday Reuters report.
Once the model is released, “it’s impossible to contain access,” he added, per the report, saying this protects users from being cut off but also means it can be used by anyone.
The open-versus-closed-source debate has divided the AI sector, PYMNTS reported in 2024. The question is less ideological than financial as far as middle-market companies’ finance chiefs are concerned.
“The relevant question is not whether open-weight AI will defeat proprietary AI,” PYMNTS reported Sept. 27. “It is whether the savings, flexibility and control offered by open models are sufficient to justify assuming more responsibility for the infrastructure beneath them. That trade-off will become more important as AI moves beyond isolated chatbots and begins operating across finance, procurement, treasury, compliance and enterprise software.”
