Coffee Meets Bagel, the online dating site, disclosed on Thursday (Feb. 14) that it was hacked.
According to a report in The Verge, citing an email that Coffee Meets Bagel sent to users earlier this week, the company said people who signed up before May of 2018 may have had their personal data lifted. In the email, the company said an unauthorized party has gained access to users’ data, without disclosing how many were impacted by the hack. It did say that some of its users who signed up before May of 2018 had their names and email addresses accessed.
The company said the hackers weren’t able to steal any credit card numbers or passwords, and added that it has hired forensic security experts to determine how the hackers got access.
Coffee Meets Bagel urged users to be vigilant in the wake of the hack. “As always, we recommend you take extra caution against any unsolicited communications that ask you for your personal data or refer you to a web page asking for personal data,” the email said, according to the report. “We also recommend avoiding clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails.”
The hack comes just a few days after some of OkCupid’s users reported that their accounts were hacked, something the online dating operator denied. According to media reports, a user contends that a hacker broke into his account and changed his password and email address so that he couldn’t reset his password. “Unfortunately, we’re not able to provide any details about accounts not connected to your email address,” said OkCupid’s customer service department in response to his complaint. The incident wasn’t an isolated account, as other news reports have surfaced in which other OkCupid users have complained about their accounts being breached. OkCupid has not been helpful in restoring their accounts, noted reports.
