Shared Payment Tokens allow AI agents to initiate transactions on the customer’s behalf using the customer’s preferred payment method, Zip Co Limited said in a Tuesday (June 16) press release.
Zip US’s support of this technology will help ensure that flexible payment options remain available in AI-driven transactions, whose reliance on card-on-file payments has limited the availability of alternative payment methods, according to the release.
Rory Herriman, U.S. chief technology and operating officer at Zip US, said in the release that this offering will help ensure that customers remain in control as shopping shifts to agentic AI.
“By supporting Stripe’s Shared Payment Tokens, we’re bringing flexible payment options into these new experiences in a way that preserves choice, transparency and confidence at every step,” Herriman said.
Stripe Head of Payments Kevin Miller said in the release that the combination of Shared Payment Tokens and Zip will enable AI agents to offer flexible payment options at checkout.
“By bringing Zip to agentic transactions, we are helping businesses lift conversion while giving buyers more options in how they pay,” Miller said.
Stripe launched Shared Payment Tokens in 2025 to let agents initiate payments without exposing credentials. They were among several products the company introduced last year to prepare for agentic commerce, PYMNTS reported in February.
Stripe Co-Founders Patrick Collison and John Collison said in their 2025 annual letter released in February: “There’s no forecasting exactly where agentic commerce will be by the end of 2026, but it’s clear we’ve already moved well beyond pure hype into a phase of building and real-world experimentation. The pace of change will likely only accelerate from here.”
Zip said in February that its buy now, pay later (BNPL) offerings were seeing enthusiasm from customers in the United States. The Australian firm said that its U.S. business showed revenue growth of 46.4% in the previous quarter and that its strong holiday trading period included the single largest day and month of transaction volumes in the history of Zip US.
