Twitter Debuts Subscriber-Only Spaces for ‘Super Followers’

Twitter, Spaces, Super Follows, subscription

Twitter is debuting a new subscriber-only element to let creators build their in-app communities with Super Follows Spaces, Social Media Today reported Tuesday (May 17).

The feature will be available to Super Follows creators, and the report noted that this will let creators offer “an extra layer of conversation,” engaging with them through live audio.

The Super Followers-only spaces will have a different color and note that it’s a Super Follower-only broadcast. While non-paying subscribers can see the broadcasts are being shared, they will have to sign on as a Super Follower to get the real access.

Twitter said that the exclusive Spaces will help creators build subscriber bases, and since other users will be able to see who else is turning in, this could be “a strong enticement” to get subsequent subscriptions.

Twitter hasn’t released much data on Super Follower usage, though its most recent earnings report saw $94 million from subscription and other revenue in that period — a decrease of 31% year over year.

The Super Followers feature only debuted in September, which might indicate a lack of interest in the program. However, not many people can activate the option yet anyway. The report noted that there’s not a lot of reason for people to pay, because they’ve always been able to access tweets for free.

PYMNTS wrote that billionaire Elon Musk said he could possibly acquire Twitter for a lower price, as he claimed there are a number of fake accounts on the platform.

Musk originally offered to buy the company for $44 billion, but he’s been talking about backing out after he reportedly seemed to assess that there might be a greater amount of fake accounts than Twitter said.

He said there was a possibility the platform hosted “four times more” fake accounts than the company said. Musk said he didn’t want to pay the same price for something that was “much worse than they claimed.”
