In a new feature unheralded in the keynote address during this years WWDC, iPhone users will soon have access to a feature that shows you the apps, installed or not, that will work in the area the user is currently standing.
According to MacRumors, the new icon display will appear on the highly coveted Apple lock screen, in the lower left hand corner of the screen across from the camera shortcut.
So, as an example, an iPhone customer near a Starbucks would see the Starbucks app icon appear on the lock screen. Though the new feature is still in beta and only in the hands of developers, it seems that the app works beyond Apple stores and major retailers, with some users reporting being able to see listing for small local train stations.
The exact details of how the app will function or what types of apps it will be compatible with are still unknown, and Apple’s comments on the subject remain limited.
“When Location Services is turned on, the device’s current location is used to recommend relevant apps on the lock screen.”
More will likely become known, as the public release of iOS 8 grows closer.
