That conclusion emerges from “The Next-Gen Commerce Playbook: Turning Checkout Into a Compounding Customer Loop,” a new PYMNTS Intelligence report examining how merchants are adapting to a rapidly changing shopping landscape. While much of the conversation around commerce has focused on AI, personalized recommendations and new payment technologies, the report points to a less obvious opportunity. Merchants increasingly see checkout as a tool for building stronger customer relationships, not simply processing transactions.

The shift comes as AI begins to influence how consumers find products online. As shoppers rely more heavily on AI-powered search, recommendations and digital assistants, merchants face greater competition for attention. In that environment, the checkout experience becomes one of the few interactions a business fully controls.

Companies are responding by investing in technologies that make purchasing faster, easier and more personalized, with the goal of encouraging customers to return.

    • Eighty-four percent of global consumers say one-click checkout is important when deciding where to shop. Convenience continues to play a major role in purchasing decisions, particularly among consumers who regularly shop online.
    • Ninety-four percent of merchants express strong interest in at least one checkout innovation. Businesses are exploring capabilities such as biometric authentication, personalized payment experiences and streamlined purchasing flows designed to reduce friction.
    • Seventy percent of consumers say access to their preferred payment methods influences where they choose to shop. Payment flexibility has become an increasingly important factor in customer acquisition and retention.

Taken together, those findings suggest checkout is evolving into something more strategic. For years, many merchants treated it as a back-office function focused on completing sales efficiently. Today, it is becoming a customer engagement tool. Every interaction at checkout creates an opportunity to strengthen trust, deliver convenience and remove obstacles that might discourage future purchases.

Think of checkout as the front desk of a hotel. The stay itself may determine whether guests enjoyed the experience, but the check-in and check-out process often shapes their final impression and influences whether they return. Digital commerce is moving in a similar direction: A smooth payment experience can leave customers with a positive memory of the brand long after the transaction is complete.

The report also highlights growing interest in technologies that support this broader approach. Merchants are looking at biometric authentication, AI-powered personalization and flexible payment options as ways to simplify purchasing while maintaining security. Rather than viewing these tools individually, many businesses are beginning to connect them into a single customer experience strategy.

The result is an optimistic outlook for merchants willing to invest in the purchase experience. As AI transforms product discovery and intensifies competition, checkout remains a touchpoint businesses can shape directly. The companies that use it to build trust, reduce friction and create lasting customer connections may find that the value of a transaction extends well beyond the sale itself.
