Today in Crypto: HubSpot Reports Data Breach; Crypto Sector Under Scrutiny Over Russia Sanctions; Tennis Superstar Naomi Osaka Takes Stake in FTX

HubSpot, a tool used to manage marketing campaigns and onboard new users, has reported a data breach that exposed information about users on BlockFi, Swan Bitcoin, NYDIG and Circle, Coindesk reported Monday (March 21).

The companies said their operations hadn’t been affected.

HubSpot is a customer relationship management tool used to store names, phone numbers and email addresses for marketing reasons.

User information was sold to the hackers, but the companies said passwords and other internal info hadn’t been breached.

In other news, global financial regulators have been scrutinizing crypto’s use during the war in Ukraine, due to the potential for Russians to use cryptocurrencies to evade sanctions, Reuters wrote Monday.

The crypto sector is reportedly “on the defensive” after warnings from lawmakers around the globe who say the companies aren’t up to the task of following the sanctions.

In addition, some crypto exchanges have not complied with calls to ban all Russian users.

Meanwhile, the Board of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) is looking for feedback from stakeholders as it develops a regulatory toolkit for retail investment, a press release said.

This will look at “emerging retail market conduct issues.” Chief among the concerns are gamification, self-directed trading, the use of social media to affect trading, the explosion of retail investing, and misconduct in capital markets.

In other news, Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, the couple charged with attempting to launder $4.5 billion in stolen crypto, has asked for a delay in the case to “facilitate the discovery process and plea discussions,” Bloomberg wrote Monday.

The couple filed a joint letter asking to postpone their hearing until May 4.

The two defendants were arrested on Feb. 8. They’d allegedly been trying to launder 119,754 bitcoin, stolen in a hack on Bitfinex.

Finally, tennis star Naomi Osaka has taken an equity stake in FTX, Reuters wrote Monday, in return for becoming an “ambassador” for the crypto exchange.

She’ll be receiving compensation in crypto, according to FTX. The partnership agreement will focus on bringing women onto the FTX platform. She’ll also play a role in directing and producing content. She joins NFL quarterback Tom Brady, NBA star Stephen Curry, and major league pitcher Shohei Ohtani as FTX ambassadors.
