    The increase comes one month after the retail segment lost 24,000 jobs in March, which many economists attributed in part to the payroll tax and lower consumer spending.

    Overall, the U.S. economy added 165,000 jobs in April. The retail industry has added an average of 21,000 jobs every month over the past year.
