Berlin-based Earlybird Venture Capital has closed its seventh early-stage fund from its Digital West investment team at a cap of 350 million euros (about $370 million), according to a Tuesday (May 17) press release, while the company is among the investors in a pair of new unicorns — private companies with valuations of $1 billion or more.

“Our portfolio companies Isar Aerospace, Aleph Alpha, Marvel Fusion or SimScale show that deep tech startups are on the rise and stem from continuous work of scientific institutions across Europe,” said Earlybird Partner and Co-Founder Hendrik Brandis in the release. “Our role is to offer these highly scientific young companies, besides our other focus sectors such as FinTech, enterprise software and sustainability, commercialization and growth opportunities on a global scale in order to make ground-breaking ideas available to society.”

Earlybrid’s Fund VII is an oversubscribed fund that will be used to support companies across enterprise software, FinTech and sustainability with a focus on deep tech, the release stated. The company has made more than 17 investments out of the fund, including existing and new portfolio companies Aleph Alpha, Deed, Finmid, Hive Technologies, HiveMQ, Marvel Fusion, MAYD, Remberg, Sikoia and ThingsTHINKING.

In the past four months, Finnish software company Aiven and German sports and soccer media platform OneFootball became unicorns, according to the release.

“We are grateful for the high level of commitment and trust coming from our long-term investors, many of whom accompanied us along almost all our fund generations,” said Earlybird Partner and Co-Founder Christian Nagel in the release.

In December 2020, Earlybird released a mobile app that makes it possible for parents and others to both donate toward a child’s future and deliver a personal message by setting up custodial investment accounts for children. Contributors are encouraged to record a video memory with each gift.
