Madewell, thredUP Open Secondhand Pop-Up Shop

Madewell

Resale platform thredUP and apparel brand Madewell on Thursday (Sept. 23) opened an in-person pop-up shop in Brooklyn that will sell only secondhand clothes, including denim, dresses, jackets and sweaters, with prices ranging from $10 to $40 per item, according to a Footwear News report.

The pop-up shop, which will be open through the end of October in the Williamsburg neighborhood, is an extension of the Madewell Forever denim resale collection that’s been available exclusively online since July.

The store has QR codes at each clothing station that show potential buyers how to buy, wear, care for and pass on clothes in a way that helps the planet. Visitors to the pop-up shop can also bring clothes to be repaired and purchase clothes that can be tailored on-site.

Madewell and thredUP reused old Madewell tote bags and screen-printed over the previous designs to ensure no new packaging materials will be needed to bring home purchases. thredUP will also offer Clean Out Kits to help consumers keep clothes out of landfills.

thredUP’s Resale-as-a-Service (RaaS) platform is being used by LG, Fabletics, Farfetch and others. CEO James Reinhart recently told investors the RaaS partnerships “just compound our supply advantage in this industry.”

The company’s ninth annual report on the secondhand market, released in June, projected it will reach $77 billion by 2025, up from $36 billion this year. Approximately $47 billion of that is projected to be in resale, which thredUP defines as the sector of secondhand that includes “more curated assortments.”

The thredUP report also found that 86 percent of consumers have purchased or are open to purchasing secondhand apparel.

As part of the company’s strategy to expand its brand across Europe, thredUP announced its pending acquisition of Bulgaria-based resale platform Remix in July.
