GM Rolling out Dozens of New Subscription Offerings

General Motors

General Motors is readying as many as 50 new subscription services, set to launch over the next three to four years.

According to published reports, GM North America President Steve Carlisle offered no specifics about these features when speaking with investors recently.

However, he noted “the bigger screens on our EVs will enable us to bring more of the data-oriented software products to the customers.”

As Kelly Blue Book points out, this could mean entertainment services like streaming movies and games, or services that use data gleaned from your vehicle, such as maintenance reminders and systems to help you drive with more efficiency.

Last year, General Motors CEO Mary Barra said GM plans to grow its subscriptions as part of a plan to double revenues.

Speaking at the company’s yearly Investor Day presentation, Barra said the company’s “very successful OnStar subscription business” has shown GM it wanted to do more in that vein.

“We’re going to build on that,” she said. “And what’s enabling this and the ability to offer so many software services is our VIP, or vehicle intelligent platform, that allows us to do over-the-air updates almost to any system in the vehicle.”

GM is also competing for a piece of the $5.5 billion connected commercial vehicle market, as PYMNTS reported recently.

The company offers a fleet telematics solution called OnStar Vehicle Insights that features a vehicle locator, vehicle health, driver behavior, performance insights, daily trip summaries and remote commands. This last tool lets drivers lock, unlock and remote start the vehicle from a website or app.

In July 2021, GM rolled out hardware that lets this service be added to non-GM vehicles as well as GM vehicles not equipped with OnStar hardware.

“Our goal is to help make fleet management as easy and efficient as possible for our current and future customers,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet. “We know many customers have mixed fleets, and we believe there is a significant benefit in streamlining the process and monitoring a whole fleet using our singular platform.”
