Margaret Thatcher’s first campaign slogan, when she was running for England’s prime minister, was “Labour isn’t working.” It’s an adage that feels very relevant today, when the labor market is working but not as well as most would like. Resumes — an approximately 500-year-old innovation — can (and should) be done better. Ditto dressing for work, which should involve more creativity than commitment. Or even in the gig economy, where employees are waiting for their paychecks to catch up to their enthusiasm for working at a particular company. The good news: We have the technology; now we just need to rebuild the workforce.
