Unattended Retail Tracker: Digging Into Restaurant Payments Innovation

American consumers have shown they’re hungry for new payment options.

As documented in the December edition of the Unattended Retail Tracker™, the results of a six-month long study conducted by USA Technologies show that just informing customers that a merchant or vendor accepts Apple Pay and other mobile wallets can boost overall sales by more than 36 percent. Messaging about Apple Pay and other mobile wallets at the point of sale also led to a 135.2 percent increase in mobile payment usage and a 44.6 percent increase in total transaction.

Eager to capitalize on consumers’ desire for mobile payment options, several technology providers and merchants recently rolled out new mobile ordering and payment options.

USA Technologies recently launched the Universal Card Link Connector, aimed at the amusement and arcade industry. The new product enables industry operators to connect cashless payment options, including mobile wallets and credit and debit cards, to machines and equipment.

Similarly, Parking BOXX recently announced the first to secure a certification from Moneris Solutions Corporation for mobile payments. Customers will now be able to pay for parking via Apple Pay, Android Pay or other mobile wallet and pay-to-tap apps.

A taste of new technology

What’s more, according to a report on eatery tech usage from Technomic, it seems consumers are particularly eager for technology in their restaurants.

Seventy-nine percent of restaurant customers surveyed agree that technology improves their experience at an eatery. New payments and engagement systems are especially popular among younger consumers, according to the report, with 77 percent of North American customers between ages 18 and 34 reporting that they want more modern options at restaurant chains.

To find out more about the latest technology that may soon be implemented inside your favorite restaurant, PYMNTS caught up wIth Dan McCann, president of Interactive Dining Technology, about how unattended retail is affecting the restaurant industry and what’s coming next.
