Amazon announced in a press release on Friday (Nov. 23) that it has signed an agreement with the Abu Dhabi-based LuLu Group that will see the two firms partner to offer online grocery shopping in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Over the coming weeks, the new grocery offering will be rolled out for customers in the UAE through the LuLu storefront on Amazon.ae, according to the release.

LuLu is one of the largest retail chains in the Middle East and operates a string of supermarkets, hypermarkets and malls in the UAE.

“Driven by our customer-obsession, innovation, and long-term thinking, we are very proud to be working alongside LuLu Group who also holds customer-centricity at the heart of its business,” Ronaldo Mouchawa, the vice president of Amazon Middle East and North Africa (MENA), said.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the service we deliver to our customers and provide additional benefits to them as they shop with Amazon, and we are confident they will enjoy shopping for groceries through this new offering as we launch it across the UAE,” he added.

The partnership will extend LuLu’s presence in the eCommerce space in a country where online and hybrid “phygital” shopping is on the rise.

As PYMNTS and Cybersource research has found, the UAE is especially open to mobile-assisted commerce. The study, “2022 Global Shopping Index: UAE Edition,” observes that over 60% of all consumers in the country used their smartphones at least once during their most recent shopping experience, whether it was online or in-store.

Indicating the firm’s readiness to adapt to evolving consumer preferences, Yusuff Ali, chairman and managing director of Lulu, said: “We believe in listening to customers and adapting our model to cater to their evolving shopping preferences.”

“We are excited to be working with [Amazon] to offer an innovative online grocery offering,” he added.
