Fiserv’s uChoose Lets BP and Amoco Customers Pay at the Pump

Fiserv says members of its uChoose program can now use card reward balances to buy gas.

The new offering, announced by the payments FinTech Monday (Jan. 22), lets users purchase fuel at roughly 7,000 BP and Amoco stations.

“Expanding our rewards redemption options to include uChoose Rewards gives our consumers different ways to save on their fuel purchases, and more reasons to choose our bp and Amoco brands,” Mukta Tandon, BP vice president, U.S. mobility marketing, said in a news release.

“The ability to redeem rewards points directly at the pump is an added convenience when people are on the go.”

According to the release, the offering is made possible via an integration with loyalty network Engage People, which itself has teamed with fuel rewards technology provider Velocity Logic. This allows uChoose Rewards members to redeem points on their fuel purchase at the pump, saving 50 cents per gallon, up to 20 gallons.

“Today’s consumer expects to be rewarded for loyalty, and they appreciate the ability to redeem rewards in a variety of ways, at places they already visit,” said Rajeev Yerukalapudi, vice president of Product Management at Fiserv. “Fuel is a regular purchase for the majority of households, and diversifying uChoose Rewards to enable redemption of points at the pump allows financial institutions to broaden the appeal of their card rewards programs.”

The new offering is happening at a time when a majority of consumers — 64% — are planning to use card-linked rewards offers for local travel in the next three years, according to recent PYMNTS Intelligence/Banyan research.

The intent to use card-linked offers (CLOs) is even higher among consumers with smaller children: 38% higher for long-distance travel and 30% for local travel benefits.

“All these figures highlight the potential of travel industry merchants to enhance customer loyalty through personalized CLOs that align with customers’ needs that can be enjoyed with their family members,” PYMNTS wrote Monday.

Fiserv last year announced it was letting cardholders redeem points for Amazon purchases.

The offering lets customers financial institutions that are part of the uChoose program and enrolled in the Amazon Shop with Points program to redeem rewards points for all or part of their qualifying purchases.
