French Competition Authority Will Look Into Cloud Computing Services

The newly appointed leader of France’s competition regulator told the French National Assembly that the digital sector would be one of his top priorities.

In a recent address to the lower house of the French Parliament, Benoit Cœuré, president of the Autorité de la concurrence, said given the emergence of critical infrastructures such as the cloud, it is essential for the independent agency to “rapidly undertake in-depth work on the consequences of the cloud in all sectors, in conjunction with the relevant sectoral authorities.”

He told the members of Parliament of his mandate to commence hearings on competition within the cloud sector. A report will be released early next year.

As part of the study, the agency’s Investigation Services will focus on defining the markets in the cloud sector, assessing the position and competitive advantages of the various players and examining the commercial practices that may be put in place.

Upon conclusion, the Autorité de la concurrence may make proposals to improve the competitive functioning of the sector.

Autorité de la concurrence’s recommendations come at a time when the French and European cloud market is booming. The average annual growth is expected to exceed 25% over the next few years, resulting in strong value-creation challenges for the economy.

In an interview with PYMNTS, Mary Kay Bowman, senior vice president and global head of payment and platform products at Visa, said the cloud can empower face-to-face commerce anytime, anywhere, in any setting.
