Microsoft Bundles Copilot Features to Challenge Anthropic and OpenAI in the Workplace

The new Copilot includes both Chat and Cowork in a new starting point called Home; Word, Excel and PowerPoint functionality in Office in Copilot; GitHub Copilot-like tools in Code; and a personal agent in Autopilot, which was previously called Scout, according to the post.

An upcoming change to Copilot will enable the tool to route the user’s work to the right capability for the job, whether Chat, Cowork or Code, so that the user doesn’t have to select a mode, the post said.

Microsoft will start rolling out Home and Code in the company’s Frontier program in the coming weeks and will expand Autopilot to private preview at the end of September, per the post.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a Friday post on social platform X that by bringing these capabilities together, the company is “building Copilot as a new OS for work that spans every model, every form factor and every task.”

Describing the changes, Nadella said: “The way we work is changing and so are our workflows. This update brings AI into that flow, from answering a question, to building an app, to getting work done on your behalf.”

By bringing coding and productivity capabilities together in Copilot, Microsoft is responding to market demand for products that are easy to use and bundle various functions, CNBC reported Friday. Anthropic and OpenAI already offer such products, the report said.

Microsoft’s new Copilot marks a “retreat from the personal chatbot market” as it merges the consumer and workplace versions of the tool and is designed for corporate users, Bloomberg reported Friday. The personal chatbot market is crowded and dominated by OpenAI and Google, with Meta’s new Muse making big gains as well.

The Information reported in July that Microsoft was planning to combine its consumer and enterprise AI apps as well as eliminate unwanted features.

Fortune reported in August that by combining its consumer and enterprise Copilot apps into a single product, Microsoft was working toward building a super app to compete more directly with ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
