The new IRS app replaces IRS2Go, the agency’s first smartphone app, which was released in January 2011.
The name change reflects the new IRS app’s broader mobile experience compared to IRS2Go, which was initially created to enable taxpayers to check their refund status, according to the app’s quick help page.

The new IRS app offers a range of account-specific features, including the ability to check refund and amended-return status, view available balance information, make payments and review payment activity, view select notices and letters, access available tax records and transcripts, manage certain profile and communication preferences, and access an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), according to the release.
The app expands secure mobile access to selected IRS Individual Online Account services. It does not replace IRS Individual Online Account, which offers additional services; IRS Business Tax Account or Tax Pro Account; or IRS.gov, which provides comprehensive tax information, guidance, forms, tools and services, the release said.
The IRS app is free and is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Current IRS2Go users who have automatic updates enabled will receive the new app through the normal update process, per the release.
“[The new IRS app] advances our digital-first agenda to meet taxpayers how and where they choose to interact with the IRS, whether at home or on the go,” IRS CEO Frank J. Bisignano said in the release. “Our goal is to make IRS services easy to access and more consistent across all of our platforms.”
Bisignano was serving as CEO of Fiserv when he was chosen by then-President-elect Donald Trump in December 2024 to oversee the Social Security Administration. His nomination to lead the SSA was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in May 2025.
Bisignano was appointed to the newly created position of CEO of the IRS by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in October 2025, while continuing to serve as commissioner of the SSA.
