The Apple App Store rang up some $1.8 billion in sales over the holiday season in the week between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, with a record $540 million in sales on New Year’s Day alone.

“Now more than ever before, customers around the world have found inspiration and value in the breadth and quality of Apple’s services, which have impacted their lives in big and small ways every day,” Apple Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue said in a Wednesday (Jan. 6) press release

Cue added, “We’re incredibly optimistic about where we’re headed, and we believe that the opportunities for developers and the creative community are endless, as are the positive and meaningful benefits to our customers.”

Customers spent a record amount throughout the holiday season, with the App Store pulling in over $200 billion for developers since its debut in 2008. The overall numbers are about 40 percent higher than last year, according to 9to5Mac.

Apple also said that it now has 90 million monthly active users for its Apple Books app.

“The trend continued over the holiday season, with App Store customers spending $1.8 billion on digital goods and services over the week between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, driven largely by spending on games. Customers ushered in 2021 by setting a new single-day spending record of over $540 million on New Year’s Day,” Apple said.

Popular and best-selling apps included ShareTheMeal, Wakeout! and FaceTime, according to the Apple press release.

App Annie said last month that spending in app stores escalated in 2020, with global spending reaching $112 billion and growing 25 percent over the same period last year. Apple’s App Store and Google Play sales set a new record.
