BitPay Rolls Out Apple Pay Support For US Prepaid Cardholders

U.S. cardholders of the BitPay Prepaid Mastercard can now add their cards to their Apple Wallets and make purchases with Apple Pay.

U.S. cardholders of the BitPay Prepaid Mastercard can add their cards to their Apple Wallets and make purchases with Apple Pay, according to a Friday (Feb. 12) announcement from BitPay.

BitPay cardholders can use Apple Pay to transact in brick-and-mortar locations, in mobile programs and on the web. Clients who are waiting for their plastic cards to come in the mail can add their virtual cards to Apple Wallet through the BitPay Wallet app and immediately begin making purchases. Samsung Pay and Google Pay support is planned for later in the quarter, according to the announcement.

“We have thousands of BitPay Wallet app customers using the BitPay Card who are always looking for new places and ways to spend their crypto,” BitPay CEO Stephen Pair said in the announcement. “Adding Apple Pay and soon Google and Samsung Pay makes it easy and convenient to use the BitPay Card in more places, from day-to-day items to luxury purchases.”

The BitPay Card lets clients immediately change digital currency into fiat currency, which is then loaded onto the card and can be spent wherever Mastercard debit is accepted throughout the globe. Clients can also withdraw cash from automated teller machines (ATMs) and make purchases online with the cards. In order to add a card to Apple Wallet, cardholders need the most updated version of the BitPay app, 12.1.0, which is available in the App Store.

BitPay provides consumers with a full digital asset management offering that includes the BitPay Prepaid Card and the BitPay Wallet. The firm has offices in North America, South America and Europe, and has landed over $70 million in funding from investment firms such as Aquiline Technology Growth, Virgin Group, Index Ventures and Founders Fund.

The news comes as BitPay filed to become a national bank in the United States, according to a published report in December, which cited a legal notice. BitPay had filed with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to create a federally regulated bank named the BitPay National Trust Bank.
