As Bloomberg News reported Thursday (Sept. 10), Walmart says food from the pizza chain can be delivered in 30 minutes or less from the retailer’s website or app, either on their own or as part of larger orders from Walmart.

Papa John’s is Walmart’s third restaurant delivery partnership in recent months, following recent deals with Dunkin’ and Subway. Unlike those chains, Papa John’s is not also a Walmart tenant.

Greg Cathey, senior vice president of eCommerce fulfillment innovation at Walmart, told Bloomberg that expanding the service to off-site eateries is the “natural evolution” of a program that’s seen strong demand since launch.

“We’re really focused on the expansion of restaurant options, so giving customers more choice” in terms cuisines and geographies makes sense, he said, because what customers eat varies according to preference.

The report added that about 65% of restaurant orders also include other items from Walmart, which has been focused in recent years on making speedier deliveries of a broader range of products with the help of its store network.

As PYMNTS wrote earlier this year, Walmart executives have continually emphasized the idea that faster fulfillment makes shoppers shop more often and for a wider range of product.

Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said during a May earnings call that Walmart can now reach around 60% of U.S. households in 30 minutes or less. He connected those capabilities to stronger engagement and greater participation in membership programs, which are an increasingly large part of the business.

That quarter’s earnings showed that Walmart customers’ demand for speed and convenience drove a 26% increase in eCommerce sales and a 45% increase in delivery volume in the U.S.

The PYMNTS Intelligence report “Global Digital Shopping Index: The AI-Powered Shopper Has Arrived” found that 28% of consumers surveyed in March throughout the U.S., the United Arab Emirates and Brazil said they made their most recent purchase online.

PYMNTS wrote recently about Walmart’s delivery offerings as it competes with Amazon to bring goods to customers via drone.

Walmart has a drone infrastructure partnership with Alphabet’s Wing, while Amazon touted plans to expand its drone delivery service, Prime Air, to nearly 500 cities and towns across the U.S. by the end of 2026.
